Split Horizon and Route Poisoning

  • This is one of the solution to avoid routing loop in a network.
  • It states that any router should not advertise the route back to the interface from which it has learned.

In the below diagram:

Router A has learned that it can reach C via B, hence it send routes to B that it can reach C via B with any hop count.

Route Poisoning:

  • In this method, if any route/link is dead, router would advertise the routes but with a special metric(hop count) value called Infinity.
  • Any routers which receive such routes considered the route as dead.
